1) November 17 - IN THE NAME OF SECURITY - Documentary on the April 2002 invasion of West Bank cities and refugee camps

This week's destruction in Rafah, the southernmost camp in Gaza, has resulted in 23 demolished homes and 5 stores leaving 250 people homeless. These acts followed similar destruction at the Israelis hands in mid-October when 250 homes were destroyed leaving nearly 2000 Palestinians homeless. Scores of Palestinians have been wounded or killed during these two incursions.

The destruction in Gaza recalls a similar invasion of West Bank towns and cities in April 2002 by the Israeli military. The April 2002 invasion is documented by a delegation from the National Lawyers Guild, which traveled throughout the West Bank to investigate allegations of war crimes by the Israeli military.

What the delegation found was a state-sponsored campaign aimed at destroying the identity and culture of the Palestinian people. This 27-minute video documents what they saw. Through interviews with Israelis and Palestinians and documentation of destroyed cities and impassable checkpoints, the video describes a brutal occupation.

CJME, UMKC Chapter of National Lawyers Guild and Campus Greens invite you to an evening to view and discuss IN THE NAME OF SECURITY.

After the video KC area resident Barbara Leclerq will discuss her observations of conditions in Bethlehem during her September 2003 trip. Anthony Badgerow with the UMKC Chapter of National Lawyers Guild will moderate this event.

2) November 17 - Joe Carr speaks about his experience with ISM in Rafah, Gaza Strip

Hear Joe Carr speak at Avila University about major stories and events he witnessed while working with the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) in Rafah, the southern-most city of the Gaza Strip, Palestine, from January to April 2003.

When: November 17, 5:00 pm
Where: Avila University, Marian Centre Alumni Lounge, 11901 Wornall Road, Kansas City, MO

3) Commentary on Separation Wall by Dr. Neve Gordon

JERUSALEM / November 6, 2003: As the government of the Jewish state forces the Palestinians in ghettos, history must be turning in its grave. Qalqiliya, a city of 45,000, has been surrounded by a concrete wall and only those who are granted permits by the Civil Administration can enter and exit the city's single gate.

Along the West Bank's north western border, an additional 12,000 people are now living in enclaves between the wall and the pre-1967 border. They too have become captives; yet the so-called security wall does not separate these Palestinian residents from Jewish Israelis, but rather from their brethren in the West Bank.

After placing them on small "islands," Israel is now "encouraging" them to leave their ancestral homes by undermining their infrastructure of existence. The goal, so it seems, is to annex the land uninhabited.

About us: Kansas City-based Citizens for Justice in the Middle East (CJME) seeks to educate the American public about the issues involved in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and to end U.S. support for the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories.

Composed of Kansas City area citizens concerned about the direction of U.S. policy in the Middle East, Citizens for Justice in the Middle East urges ordinary American citizens to speak out in favor of an even-handed U.S. policy in the Middle East that recognizes the rights and aspirations of both Israelis and Palestinians. Only by respecting the need to provide both parties in the conflict with security and self-determination can a viable and just peace be assured.
