Parents of Gaza activist Rachel Corrie to visit Kansas City this weekend, April 10-11
Final Weekend of “My Name is Rachel Corrie” play at Unicorn Theatre
Craig and Cindy Corrie, the parents of Rachel Corrie, the 23-year-old American killed by an Israeli Defense Forces bulldozer in Gaza six years ago, will visit Kansas City on Friday, April 10 and Saturday, April 11 to attend the play “My Name is Rachel Corrie” performed on the Unicorn Theatre’s Jerome Stage at 3828 Main Street, Kansas City, Missouri. “My Name is Rachel Corrie,” is a play compiled from Rachel Corrie's journals and e-mails during her work in Gaza. The last four performances of the play are Thursday, April 9 through Sunday, April 12. Thursday through Saturday performances start at 8:00 pm, the Sunday performance starts at 3:30 pm. Tickets are $21 each. [photo caption: Cindy and Craig Corrie with author Alice Walker in Gaza in March 2009]
Craig and Cindy Corrie will appear for a discussion after the Friday and Saturday performances to discuss Rachel’s work and their participation in a Gaza aid delegation in March. The Corries joined 60 other people on the March delegation to Gaza, including Pulitzer Prize winning novelist Alice Walker. Delegates -- which included members of the Jewish and Muslim communities, as well as doctors, businesspeople, lawyers and college students – met with Palestinian aid groups, Gazan women, and United Nations officials. They also toured the aftermath of the three-week Israeli assault earlier this year and deliver 2,000 gift baskets to Gazan women, purchased through an outpouring of donations through the CODEPINK website to honor Gazan women.
Craig and Cindy Corrie have traveled and spoken extensively responding to interest in their daughter’s story. “We are encouraged that people throughout the U.S. and around the world want to know more. We hope and believe that in sharing Rachel’s story and ours that we continue her work—drawing attention to the plight of the Palestinian people and supporting those Israelis, Palestinians and internationals who are working determinedly to end the illegal Israeli occupation and to bring freedom, justice, and a secure peace to these two peoples,” Cindy Corrie said.

Comments about My Name is Rachel Corrie from The Pitch:
“Gilchrist and director Johansen summon the world around Corrie, one ablaze with voices and violence and well-realized moments of grace....with rare and admirable courage, (they) stare down the great questions of the age.”
Comments about My Name is Rachel Corrie from the Kansas City Star:
“...the gifted Katie Gilchrist captures an emotional reality... and finds a surprising degree of honest humor.”
Comments about My Name is Rachel Corrie by audience members from KC STAGE (kcstage.com):
| “I was pleased to see this play brought to Kansas City but had doubts that it could be as impactful as Rachel's journals had been. I am happy to say it not only met but exceeded my expectations. Katie Gilchrist's performance was amazing. She absolutely captivated the audience. I was with a friend that does not follow the conflict at all and even she was moved by Katie's performance. I highly recommend this play to one and all. It is not often that you can be so entertained by a subject of such great importance to the entire world.” | |
| "What an incredibly moving production of 'My Name Is Rachel Corrie.' I understand why you chose Katie Gilchrist who captured so well the spirit of Rachel. The story is one of sadness but also one of inspiration. You are right...we need to work harder for peace." | |
| "Herman's direction and staging were wonderful, but of course the true ‘star’ of the production is Katie Gilchrist as Rachel. As an actor, I can tell you that there is nothing more challenging than a sustained monologue that must keep the audience riveted for the entire show. Katie was brilliant. Her pacing and passion for the script made the entire play a thought-provoking blur of 85 minutes. She truly embodied the character!" |
