A Sacred Concert: Reflections on War, Grief, and Hope

Adagio for Strings – Samuel Barber

Dona Nobis Pacem – Ralph Vaughan Williams

Trauermusik – Paul Hindemith

The Village Choir and Orchestra, Matthew Shepard, guest conductor

Kathy Joyce, soprano

Christopher Reames, baritone

The Village Choir and Orchestra is pleased to present a concert of three extraordinary musical works, each composed in 1936, which provide opportunities for reflection on the universal human experiences of war, grief, and hope. Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings and Paul Hindemith’s Trauermusik are purely instrumental works – at times thoughtful and contemplative – at times extremely dramatic. Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem is a masterful weaving together of poems, prose, and biblical texts (including three poems of Walt Whitman). The concert, conducted by Village Choir Assistant Conductor Matthew Shepard, will be approximately an hour in length.

Following the concert an offering to benefit the Hope Flowers School in Bethlehem will be received. All proceeds will be directed to the school. For more information visit http://www.cjme.org/hfs

Hope Flowers is an independent, private elementary school located on a hillside in Bethlehem, Palestine where 220 Christian and Muslim children receive a Montessori-based education. Children learn to value their own dignity and to affirm the dignity of others. In addition to offering trauma-recovery counseling, intercultural and interfaith awareness along with democratic principles are emphasized. Because of the deep poverty in the West Bank, many students rely on scholarship assistance.
