Norman Finkelstein: The Struggle for Peace & Justice - April 27 in Kansas City

By admin - Posted on 18 March 2011

Fascinating and controversial author Norman Finkelstein (Ph.D., Princeton) is coming to Kansas City to speak on Wednesday, April 27th at 6 PM. The talk will be at the University of Missouri-Kansas City in Royall Hall, room 111 (street address 800 E. 52nd Street, Kansas City, MO).

This is your likely once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear a man who has risked much to stand for his values in the struggle for peace and justice for Palestine, and by extension, Israel.

Dr. Finkelstein is the subject of a recent documentary, American Radical, the Trials of Norman Finkelstein. Both of his parents were survivors of concentration camps in the Holocaust, and he otherwise lost “every single member of my family on both sides” in that terrible time. His mother strongly influenced his ideas about justice, and his life became dedicated to passionately defending the human rights of Palestinians and his own right to speak out against Israel’s violations of international law, as you’ll see in this trailer from the documentary:

The following is a biography from his own website (www.normanfinkelstein.com):

"Norman G. Finkelstein received his doctorate in 1988 from the Department of Politics at Princeton University. For many years he taught political theory and the Israel-Palestine conflict. He is currently an independent scholar. Finkelstein is the author of five books which have been translated into more than 40 foreign editions: Beyond Chutzpah: On the misuse of anti-Semitism and the abuse of history (University of California Press, 2005; expanded paperback edition, 2008) The Holocaust Industry: Reflections on the exploitation of Jewish suffering (Verso, 2000; expanded paperback edition, 2003) Image and Reality of the Israel-Palestine Conflict (Verso, 1995; expanded paperback edition, 2003) A Nation on Trial: The Goldhagen thesis and historical truth (with Ruth Bettina Birn) (Henry Holt, 1998) The Rise and Fall of Palestine: A personal account of the intifada years (University of Minnesota, 1996) He has just completed a new book entitled A Farewell to Israel: The coming break-up of American Zionism, to be published in 2009."

The April 27th talk is sponsored by Culturally Speaking as well as Citizens for Justice in the Middle East, Disciples Peace Fellowship, The Muslim Student Association, and the Muslim American Society. Other groups wishing to sponsor this talk, or anyone with questions, please contact Bassam Helwani at 816 217-7922.

Many thanks for all you do in the interest of peace and justice.

Please join us to hear Dr. Finkelstein on Wednesday, April 27th.
